If you're flying home to Zimbabwe for Christmas, book earlier than you think you need to. December is the most expensive month on London–Harare routes, and dates narrow fast once school holidays start on both ends. Aggregator data has shown December average fares close to £1,000 return, against roughly £400–£650 in quieter months, so aim to have your booking done by August or September, not November. Ethiopian Airlines, Qatar Airways and RwandAir typically include two 23kg checked bags in economy on this route, which matters if you're carrying gifts and the usual amount of luggage a Christmas trip home involves. And if you're bringing things back for family, check ZIMRA's current customs rules before you pack; our duty-free guide explains what to look at.

Why does December cost more to fly to Zimbabwe?
December sits at the top of the calendar for a simple reason: everyone wants to travel at once. UK-based Zimbabweans are off work, children are out of school in both countries, and Christmas at home is one of the few times a year the whole family can realistically be together. Airlines price accordingly.
Kayak's route data for London–Harare put average December returns at roughly £1,000–£1,050, against around £595–£650 in the cheaper months, which cluster in February and again through September to November. Aggregators disagree on the single cheapest month, but all of them flag December, alongside UK summer holidays in July and August, as the most expensive time to fly this route.
A general rule from UK–Africa flight specialists is that December fares on popular routes can run 20–40% above off-peak pricing, though that figure covers routes like Lagos, Nairobi and Johannesburg rather than Harare specifically. Treat it as a useful benchmark.
When should I book my flight home?
Airlines typically open December inventory nine to eleven months ahead, and the cheapest fare classes go first. This isn't a pricing trick; each fare bucket holds a fixed number of seats, and popular dates fill early, so once those are gone, what's left costs more.
| Month | What to do |
|---|---|
| September | Start pricing routes now. Compare direct and one-stop options, and get a quote from an agent if you want help weighing baggage allowance against fare. |
| October | Book if your dates are firm. This is the sweet spot most UK–Africa specialists point to for December travel. |
| November | Still workable, but your date and fare choice narrows. Some flexibility on exact travel dates can still find you a better price. |
| December | Expect higher fares and limited seat choice, especially for departures in the two weeks either side of Christmas Day and New Year. Book as far ahead of your travel date as possible within the month. |
If your December dates are already fixed — a family gathering, a wedding, a school break — there's little upside in waiting and hoping a fare drops. On a constrained route like this, prices tend to move up as the date approaches, not down. Which airline gives you the most baggage?
For a Christmas trip home, baggage allowance often matters as much as the fare. Most travellers on this route aren't packing light: gifts, clothes, and often food or household items for family, on top of the usual luggage for a few weeks away. For a fuller airline-by-airline comparison beyond baggage, see our guide to the best airline from the UK to Harare.
| Airline | Route | Typical checked baggage (economy) | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Air Zimbabwe | Direct, Gatwick–Harare | Two bags, 23kg each, on international flights, per Air Zimbabwe's baggage page (checked 3 October 2026) | Resumed July 2026. Hand luggage rules are set by Air Zimbabwe; confirm your allowance for your fare when booking |
| Ethiopian Airlines | Via Addis Ababa | Two bags, 23kg each | Consistent allowance on Africa routings |
| Qatar Airways | Via Doha | Two bags, 23kg each, on standard economy fares | Entry-level "Lite" fares may drop to one bag |
| RwandAir | Via Kigali | Two bags, 23kg each | Kigali–Harare status is inconsistently reported; confirm the route is bookable before relying on it |
| Emirates | Via Dubai | Depends on the fare type; check the allowance shown on your fare | Confirm at booking |
| Kenya Airways | Via Nairobi | Varies by fare and season; one bag or two depending on fare type — check the Kenya Airways baggage page | Confirm at booking |
Baggage allowances vary by fare class, booking date and occasionally by aircraft. Always check the allowance on the specific fare you're quoted, not a general rule of thumb — adding extra baggage at booking is almost always cheaper than paying for it at the airport.
If you know you'll be travelling heavy this Christmas, talk to us before you book. We can compare the fare-and-baggage combination across airlines rather than chasing the lowest headline price — a slightly pricier fare with an extra free bag can work out cheaper overall than paying for excess baggage later. What about the direct Gatwick to Harare flight?
Air Zimbabwe resumed its direct London Gatwick–Harare service in July 2026 after a 14-year hiatus. Flights run three days a week from London Gatwick's South Terminal, and London Gatwick says it is the UK's only airport with direct flights to Harare. Air Zimbabwe is named on the UK and EU Air Safety Lists, and the service runs under a wet-lease (ACMI) arrangement with Spain's Plus Ultra Líneas Aéreas. Plus Ultra supplies the aircraft, crew, maintenance and insurance, and Air Zimbabwe manages ticket sales and the commercial side of the route. Our airline comparison guide covers that arrangement, and the airline's reliability record, in full.
In its first weeks, the route saw disruption: a late-July 2026 rescheduling pushed a Harare–London departure back roughly a day, and a further cancellation in early August was linked to crew availability on what is currently a single leased-aircraft rotation. Operations resumed afterwards, but given how new the route is, treat it as useful rather than guaranteed for a trip you can't afford to have go wrong. Keep a backup routing in mind — via Addis Ababa, Doha, Dubai or Nairobi.
Air Zimbabwe's published schedule lists days only, with no departure times. Between 18 December 2026 and 4 January 2027, its weekly pattern gives these dates:
- London Gatwick to Harare: Saturday 19, Monday 21, Thursday 24, Saturday 26, Monday 28 and Thursday 31 December 2026, then Saturday 2 and Monday 4 January 2027.
- Harare to London Gatwick: Friday 18, Sunday 20, Wednesday 23, Friday 25, Sunday 27 and Wednesday 30 December 2026, then Friday 1 and Sunday 3 January 2027.
Check the current schedule and flight times with us before you book, because the airline can change them.

What can you bring home to Zimbabwe duty-free?
ZIMRA operates a traveller's rebate for goods you bring in for personal use. We have not confirmed the current figures and exclusions directly with ZIMRA, so we don't quote them here. Check zimra.co.zw or ask us closer to your travel date, since customs allowances can change, and see our duty-free guide for what to look at.
A few conditions apply: goods must be for personal use rather than resale, declared honestly, and the traveller must be 18 or older. Alcohol has its own separate limits.
Some items are excluded from the rebate regardless of value, so duty can apply even on small amounts. Prohibited items include pornographic material, lockable or flick knives, skin-lightening creams containing hydroquinone or mercury, and counterfeit currency. Firearms, wildlife products, agricultural produce and large cash amounts are restricted rather than banned outright, but need permits or formal declaration.
It's easy to go over your allowance with a family's worth of Christmas gifts — declare honestly and budget for the possibility of duty on the excess, rather than being caught out at arrival. For more on what diaspora travellers typically pack and plan for, see our Zimbabwe diaspora flight guide.
What can't you pack in your hand luggage?
UK airport security rules apply on the outbound leg regardless of airline. Liquids in hand luggage are limited to containers of 100ml or less; some UK airports with newer scanners allow more, but that's not yet consistent everywhere, so pack liquids under 100ml in your carry-on and put anything larger in checked baggage. One lighter is allowed, carried on your person in a resealable bag rather than in the hold. Frozen items generally aren't permitted through hand luggage security, with limited exceptions for medicine and baby products.
If your gifts include liquids, creams, or anything frozen, plan for checked baggage rather than carry-on.
What should you know about Harare airport and cash?
Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport's international terminal, opened in 2023, raised capacity considerably, though the airport has historically seen constraints at busy periods, and December tends to be one of its busiest stretches as diaspora travel converges on the same few weeks.
The passenger service charge, reported at USD 35 for international departures, is built into your ticket price by the airline rather than collected at the airport, per the airport operator's own tariff page.
USD cash remains the practical currency for most travel spending in Zimbabwe, alongside the ZiG currency introduced in 2024. Bring newer-series US notes — older or damaged bills are routinely rejected — and carry small denominations, since change can be scarce. ATMs are unreliable for USD; only some banks' machines in Harare and Victoria Falls dispense it, and not consistently.
Is my flight protected if something goes wrong?
Under CAA rules, a flight-only ticket issued to you immediately once you've paid in full is generally not ATOL protected — that immediate issuance is what puts it outside ATOL cover. If protection matters, ask how your booking will be issued, or consider a flight-inclusive package, which typically does carry ATOL cover.
Travel insurance isn't a legal requirement, but for a trip involving family, luggage and multiple airports, it's worth having — look for cover including cancellation, medical costs, delay and lost luggage.
If cost is a concern up front, our Book Now Pay Later option lets you spread the cost with a deposit now and the balance paid off before you travel, rather than needing the full fare at once.
