Planning a flight from the UK to Johannesburg
This page is for anyone in the UK working out how to fly to Johannesburg, whether you hold a British passport, a South African passport or both, and whether you are travelling for family, work or a holiday. Johannesburg's airport is O.R. Tambo International Airport, code JNB. Each fact below comes from a named airline, airport or government page, and the sources section at the end gives the date we read them. Where we could not read a page, we say so instead of guessing.
Which airlines list Johannesburg from the UK
Virgin Atlantic lists a daily service to Johannesburg from London Heathrow. Virgin Atlantic lists about 11 hours of flight time on its Johannesburg page.
British Airways lists Johannesburg among its Heathrow destinations. We could not read its route page when we checked, so we state no British Airways flight time, frequency or baggage allowance. Ask us for them.
Emirates lists flights to Johannesburg from eight UK airports. Its pages do not name the stopover airport, so we do not either.
Ethiopian Airlines lists Addis Ababa as the stopover hub on its London to Johannesburg page, with departures from London Heathrow and London Gatwick.
Kenya Airways has a fare page for London Heathrow to Johannesburg. The page names no hub, stops or journey time.
We name only airlines whose own pages we could read. Ask us what else is available for your dates.
Choosing a route
How you get to Johannesburg depends on your dates, your airport and your budget. Our routing guide for London to Johannesburg goes into those choices in depth, so this page does not repeat them.
Ask us about your options
Want to know your options for your dates? Send us your dates and nearest UK airport on WhatsApp or through the contact form. We'll check what's available for your journey and include it in your free quote.
UK airports for Johannesburg
Emirates lists flights to Johannesburg from London Heathrow, London Gatwick, London Stansted, Manchester, Birmingham, Edinburgh, Glasgow and Newcastle. Virgin Atlantic and British Airways list Heathrow, and Ethiopian Airlines names Heathrow and Gatwick. If you live somewhere else, tell us your nearest airport and we will check the options.
Entry requirements by passport
Entry rules depend on the passport you hold, and each government speaks only for its own citizens. We link to the official pages instead of repeating the rules, because they change.
If you hold both passports, confirm with the Department of Home Affairs which applies to you before you travel.
Baggage, including family travel
Virgin Atlantic lists a checked allowance by cabin in its help centre, from none included on Economy Light to two bags of 32 kg on Upper Class. Emirates lists a piece concept for flights into Africa, where the number of pieces depends on your fare. The table above has both. Virgin Atlantic's table is its general one rather than a Johannesburg page, so your ticket is the authority.
If your family is bringing extra bags, tell us how many and we will compare allowances before you choose a fare. Travelling with children? The Department of Home Affairs publishes an advisory page on requirements for children travelling through South African ports of entry. Check it for what applies to your family.
More on South Africa
For the wider picture, see our South Africa destination page. Our visa guide for Zimbabwe and South Africa covers entry in more depth, and UK to Africa flight times compares journey times across countries.
