What's the fastest way to get to Zimbabwe right now?
Air Zimbabwe runs the only direct UK service, between London Gatwick's South Terminal and Harare, three times a week, in around 10 hours 40 minutes. It's a newly reinstated route — it only resumed in July 2026 after a 14-year gap — and it had some early reliability issues in its first weeks, so it's worth confirming the current schedule with us or directly with the airline rather than assuming today's timetable is fixed. If the direct flight doesn't have a seat on your dates, Ethiopian Airlines (via Addis Ababa), Emirates (via Dubai), Qatar Airways (via Doha) and Kenya Airways (via Nairobi) all run daily or near-daily one-stop services into Harare, generally adding several hours to the journey. For most emergency travel, one of these one-stop options will have a seat sooner than waiting for the next direct departure — which is exactly the kind of comparison we can do faster on the phone than you can across five separate airline websites. Do airlines still offer bereavement or compassionate fares?
Honestly — probably not in the way many people expect. We checked the current public policies of Air Zimbabwe, Ethiopian Airlines, Emirates, Qatar Airways and Kenya Airways, and none of them currently advertises a set, discounted "bereavement fare" on their own website. This matches a broader industry trend: most major international airlines have quietly dropped published bereavement discounts over the past decade, and general guides on the subject now list mainly North American and Australasian carriers as still offering anything of the kind.
What some airlines do describe is a case-by-case compassionate process — a dedicated line that can waive a change or cancellation fee on a booking you already hold, once you provide a death certificate and proof of relationship. That's different from a discount on a new ticket, and it usually only helps once you've already booked. Our honest advice: don't delay booking while you wait to hear back about a possible bereavement discount that may not exist for your airline. It's almost always faster, and often no more expensive, for us to compare live fares across all the available airlines and find the best price on the day you need to travel.
Do you need a visa, and can you get one in time?
Yes — UK passport holders are not visa-exempt for Zimbabwe, so a visa is required regardless of how urgent the trip is. The good news is that both routes are genuinely usable at short notice:
- Visa on arrival: available at Harare and Victoria Falls airports (and some land borders), usually granted for up to 30 days. Bring small-denomination US dollar notes — see our Zimbabwe and South Africa visa guide for the current single/double-entry fee figures, and confirm the exact amount as you go through.
- eVisa: apply online in advance at evisa.gov.zw — the only official portal. Several look-alike commercial sites charge more and are not the government service, so double-check the address before you pay.
Either way, your passport needs at least 6 months' validity remaining from your arrival date, and 3 blank pages — this is confirmed directly on gov.uk's Zimbabwe travel advice. It's also worth knowing that the Zimbabwean Embassy in London no longer issues visas itself, so the eVisa or on-arrival route is the only option from the UK side. None of this is immigration advice — for anything specific to your own situation, gov.uk or the eVisa portal's own guidance is the authority, not us.
What if your own passport isn't ready?
If your passport has expired, is about to, or doesn't have enough validity or blank pages left, you may still be able to travel in time using HM Passport Office's urgent services — but only if you're renewing an existing adult passport, not applying for a first one:

Both are booked through the official "get a passport urgently" service on gov.uk — appointments run at a small number of UK offices and new slots are released daily, so it's worth checking as soon as you know you need one rather than waiting.
If you're a Zimbabwean national living in the UK with an eVisa, indefinite leave to remain, or another current immigration status, returning to the UK afterwards doesn't require a UK Electronic Travel Authorisation — gov.uk confirms that anyone who already holds permission to enter or stay doesn't need one. What documents should you bring?
Beyond the passport and visa, it's worth having on hand: proof of your onward or return travel, evidence of the reason for your trip if asked at the border (a funeral notice or similar is generally sufficient, though not a legal requirement), and, if you're a UK immigration status holder rather than a British citizen, a share code as backup for re-entry. If children are travelling, bring their birth certificates as a precaution even where not strictly required, since individual check-in staff don't always apply relaxed rules consistently. None of this replaces reading the current guidance on gov.uk or the eVisa portal for your specific circumstances.
Ask about flexible tickets before you pay
Funeral and family-emergency travel rarely fits a fixed, plannable itinerary — the return date can move, or a second family member may need to follow a few days later. Fare rules vary enormously by airline and ticket type, and the cheapest fare shown on a comparison site is very often the least flexible one available. Tell us at the outset that your dates might change, and we'll steer you toward fares that give you room to move, even where the headline price is a little higher — it's usually cheaper than paying a full change fee later.
