There is no direct flight from Manchester or Birmingham to Harare. From the regions you either fly one-stop through a hub such as Addis Ababa, Nairobi, Doha or Dubai, or you travel to London Gatwick and take Air Zimbabwe's nonstop service. Which is better depends on your dates, your bags and how much you value a shorter flight over a longer day getting to the airport.
This guide is about the regional question. If you want to compare airlines head to head, read our airline comparison for UK to Harare. For the Gatwick nonstop in detail, see flying from the UK to Zimbabwe. For when to book, see the cheapest time to fly London to Harare. Here we only cover what changes when you start from Manchester, Birmingham, Scotland, the North East, Yorkshire or the South West.
We researched this on 3 October 2026. Schedules change, so we check the live routing and baggage with you on the day you book, and before you pay.
Is there a direct flight from Manchester or Birmingham to Harare?
No. Harare's international airport, Robert Gabriel Mugabe International (HRE), is not served nonstop from any UK regional airport. The only nonstop between the UK and Harare that we are aware of is Air Zimbabwe's service from London Gatwick, which restarted in July 2026. Every other option from the regions has at least one stop.
That is not unusual for Zimbabwe. The big carriers connect it to the world through hubs, so the useful questions are which hub, which airline, and how well the connection suits you.
The three realistic ways to get from the regions to Harare
- One-stop through an African hub. Fly from your regional airport (or from London) to Addis Ababa or Nairobi, then on to Harare.
- One-stop through a Gulf hub. Fly to Dubai or Doha, then on to Harare. These routes are explained below, with an important caution about 2026.
- Travel to Gatwick and take the nonstop. Get yourself to London by train or coach, then fly Air Zimbabwe direct.
A fourth option, flying from the regions to London and picking up a separate ticket to Harare, can look cheap but leaves you responsible for the connection, your bags and any missed flight. We would only suggest it with a long gap and a clear understanding of the risk. See the section on bags and missed connections.
Which routes work from Manchester?
Manchester has the widest choice of hub flights of the English regional airports, so this is where most Northern travellers start.
- Ethiopian Airlines via Addis Ababa. Ethiopian flies from Manchester to Addis Ababa and then on to Harare, and it is one of the most useful routings from the North. Some Manchester departures may show a brief technical stop in Europe, so check the booking screen, not just the headline.
- Kenya Airways via Nairobi. Kenya Airways flies from Manchester to Nairobi and connects on to Harare. We confirm the operating days when we quote.
- Emirates via Dubai. Emirates flies from Manchester to Dubai and on to Harare. See the Gulf section below before choosing this.
- Qatar Airways via Doha. Qatar Airways resumed Manchester, Birmingham and Edinburgh services from April 2026 after the spring disruption, and flies Doha to Harare. Frequencies were still being rebuilt, so we check dates. See the Gulf section.
- Via a European hub. KLM and Air France, with Amsterdam and Paris connections, are sometimes sold to Harare. These tend to be longer and are not always the cheapest. Ask us to check the timetable for your dates.
Which routes work from Birmingham?
Birmingham has fewer long-haul links than Manchester, but the Midlands has a large Zimbabwean community and the main options are the same hubs.
- Emirates via Dubai. Emirates flies from Birmingham to Dubai and on to Harare. See the Gulf section below before choosing this.
- Qatar Airways via Doha. Qatar Airways flies from Birmingham to Doha and on to Harare, with services resumed from mid-April 2026. See the Gulf section below.
- Via London or Manchester. Some travellers fly a short domestic or connecting leg to Heathrow or Manchester for the Ethiopian or Kenya Airways one-stop. A through-ticket protects you if the first flight is late; a separate cheap domestic fare does not.
If you live in the West Midlands, the train from Birmingham to London is much quicker than the Manchester one, which makes the Gatwick option more realistic for you than for someone in Newcastle or Glasgow.
What about Edinburgh, Glasgow, Newcastle, Bristol and Leeds Bradford?
Fewer long-haul options leave these airports, so the answer is usually one of two things.
- Edinburgh has Qatar Airways and Emirates services to their Gulf hubs, which then connect to Harare.
- Glasgow and Newcastle have Emirates flights to Dubai, which connect on to Harare.
- Bristol and Leeds Bradford do not have a long-haul link to Africa or the Gulf that we have been able to confirm. For these airports, the realistic choice is a short connection via Heathrow, Manchester, Amsterdam or another European hub, or a trip to London.
We would rather say "we need to check" than guess. Tell us your closest airport and dates through the enquiry form and we will check what actually operates.
Should you fly from the regions or take the train to Gatwick for the nonstop?
The Air Zimbabwe nonstop is the attraction. Reported as three times a week from Gatwick South Terminal (Monday, Thursday and Saturday), it avoids a connection, a second set of check-in queues and the risk of a missed link. The airline's schedule can change, and August saw a reported cancellation, so confirm the date close to travel. See the Air Zimbabwe section in our Zimbabwe flights guide for detail.
A one-stop from your home airport has its own advantages: no trip to London, a through-ticket, often more baggage choice, and more flights to choose from. It usually adds time in the air and at the hub.
Weigh these things up:
- Getting to Gatwick. From Manchester the coach is roughly six hours on the National Express timetable we checked, and the quickest trains were listed at a little over three hours, usually longer with a change in London. Published fares for a single journey run from around £14 to £44 by National Express coach and an average of about £49 by train, based on listings in October 2026, so budget for both ways. Allow a sensible buffer, and possibly a night in London if the departure is early.
- Gatwick only flies on three days. Your holiday dates and the Monday, Thursday, Saturday pattern have to match.
- Baggage. Check the Air Zimbabwe allowance on your fare. Our airline comparison covers this.
- Cost. Compare the full door-to-door cost: flight, travel to Gatwick, any hotel. As a guide, based on published prices in October 2026, December return fares are typically from around £1,000 to £1,300 per person from Manchester and Birmingham, against roughly £700 to £750 in the cheaper months. Air Zimbabwe advertised launch fares from Gatwick from £675 return, but December is usually dearer and fares were reported to have risen since. These are guide ranges, not Travel Orbit offers. We confirm the exact price when we quote.
- Risk. If the nonstop is cancelled, you are rebooked on the airline's terms and may be in London with limited alternatives. A through-ticket via a hub with a bigger network is easier to reroute.
As a rough rule, the nonstop suits travellers within a couple of hours of London, those with limited time off and anyone who dislikes connections. A one-stop from home suits people in the North and Scotland, anyone carrying a lot of bags who needs a high allowance, and anyone whose dates do not fit the three weekly flights.
How long will the journey really take?
We are not going to quote one number, because it depends entirely on the hub and the connection time. As a guide, the Gatwick nonstop is the shortest in the air. Via Addis Ababa, Nairobi, Dubai or Doha you add a connection of a few hours at the hub, plus the first leg from your home airport. A two-hour connection is tight if you have checked bags and a delayed first flight; four to six hours is calmer.
Third-party journey-time listings for regional UK departures to Harare range widely, from the high teens of hours up to well over a day, depending on the layover. The longer ones usually come from overnight connections. Published listings show a quickest one-stop of around 13 hours from Manchester, typical journeys of roughly 16 to 26 hours, and overnight connections running much longer. Ask us for the exact timings on your dates and we will quote the real elapsed time, not just the flying time.
Gulf hubs right now: what to check
Emirates and Qatar Airways are big, well-established carriers to Harare, but 2026 has not been normal for the Gulf. Flights through Dubai and Doha were heavily disrupted earlier in the year, and the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) advice remains cautious.
- The FCDO's UAE advice (updated 24 July 2026) refers to strikes and retaliatory attacks across the region since 8 July and tells travellers to be ready for cancellations and airspace closures.
- The FCDO's Qatar advice (updated 19 August 2026) says the same about possible flight cancellations and periodic airspace closures at short notice.
- Airlines reported restoring much of their UK networks after the spring, but schedules can be thinned or changed with little warning. Check your airline's own status page before you travel.
None of this means the Gulf is closed to you. It means the hub you choose is part of the risk. If a disruption matters to you, such as a funeral or a fixed event, consider routing via Addis Ababa or Nairobi, or the Gatwick nonstop. Always buy travel insurance that covers disruption and read what your policy says about regional conflict. If you book a package, ask about ATOL protection; a flight-only ticket is not always covered in the same way, and we explain what applies to your booking.
Bags on regional and one-stop routes
Through-checking is the main thing to ask about. On a single ticket, your bags are usually tagged to Harare from your home airport, so you do not collect them at the hub. On separate tickets, you may have to collect and re-check them, which adds time and risk.
Allowances differ by fare, not just by airline. In our airline comparison, we found that some carriers include two bags on standard economy while others limit the cheapest fare to one. Do not assume. If you are taking goods home, also read our guide to ZIMRA duty-free allowances before you pack.
Booking tips for December
December is the busiest period for UK to Zimbabwe travel, and regional departures sell out at the same time as London ones, often faster because there are fewer flights. Our practical tips are as follows.
- Decide your fixed dates as early as you can. See flying home to Zimbabwe for Christmas for the seasonal picture.
- Be flexible by a day or two on the outbound, which can open up a better connection.
- Check passport validity and Zimbabwe entry requirements early. Our visa guide for Zimbabwe and South Africa covers it.
- If you are heading to Bulawayo or Victoria Falls, see flights to Bulawayo and Victoria Falls from the UK.
- If you want to spread the cost, ask about Fly Now Pay Later and check the terms.
What happens if I miss a connection?
On a single through-ticket, the airline that issued it normally has to get you onward, and you should go to its transfer desk. On two separate tickets, the second airline owes you nothing for a missed link. This is the single biggest reason we steer travellers from the regions towards one booking. Rules differ by airline and fare, so ask us before booking.
How Travel Orbit can help from the regions
Tell us your home airport, dates, number of bags and how flexible you are, and we will check which routes really operate, what the connection looks like and what the bags are on that fare. You can use the enquiry form or email [email protected].
